This book – published on occasion of the celebration for the ship’s 90th anniversary (1931-2021) – pays homage to the Italian Navy sailing vessel, built as training ship and actually used for the training of the Naval Academy cadets. In 1962, the US aircraft carrier Independence, meeting the Amerigo Vespucci in full sail in the Mediterranean, replied to her signal with the following message: ‘You are the most beautiful ship in the world’. The Amerigo Vespucci is a unique enchanting universe, where past and present merge: the immense sails made of sailcloth (‘tela olona’), the orders whistled to the boatswains climbed dozen metres up the masts, the ancient practice of sextant observation are combined with modern electronic navigation equipment and the advanced auxiliary engine. Following in the wake of the glorious sailing tradition, the Vespucci crossed the seas and horizons of history, always preserving the Italian Navy’s values and millenary traditions, in the service of our nation.
